By 2026, IoT’s revenue is expected to grow to between $0.5 and $1.8 trillion USD.IoT has applications in numerous sectors.Specifically, we will review and discuss study cases and impact of IoT on future precision agriculture. Sensors with wireless connectivity will transform future precision agriculture.We will discuss each of the components of the IoT hardware including sensors, antennas and wireless transceivers.We will also discuss major challenges in IoT devices including energy harvesting.

Biography:

Anh-Vu Pham (SM’03) received the B.E.E. (with highest honors), M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, in 1995, 1997, and 1999, respectively. Anh-Vu joined the University of California at Davis in 2002 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to full Professor in 2008. From 1999 to 2002, he was an Assistant Professor at Clemson University. Anh-Vu is conducting research in microwave and millimeter wave integrated circuit design, power amplifiers, electronic packaging, sensors, energy harvesting and phased array antennas. His research has been supported by DARPA, National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Air Force Research Laboratory and numerous companies. He has published ~160 peer-reviewed papers, several book chapters, and two books. Anh-Vu served as the Chair of IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques (MTT) Technical Coordinate Committee on Microwave and Millimeter Packaging (2003-2006), and Chair of IEEE International Microwave Symposium Technical Committee on Power Amplifiers and Integrated Devices. He received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2001 and the 2008 Outstanding Young Engineer Award from the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society. He was a Microwave Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE MTT for the term 2010-2012. He was the Co-Chair of the Technical Program Committee for the IEEE International Microwave Symposium in San Francisco, 2016 and is the Co-Chair of the Technical Program Committee for the IEEE Asia Pacific Microwave Conference. Anh-Vu is currently a co-director of the Davis Millimeter Wave Research Center. In 1997, Anh-Vu co-founded RF Solutions, a fabless semiconductor company providing power amplifiers and RFICs for WiFi applications. RF Solutions, Atlanta, GA, was acquired by Anadigics in 2003. In 2008, he co-founded and served as the CTO of Planarmag, Inc, West Sacramento, CA, which was acquired by TE Connectivity in 2010.

Professor Xuan-Tu Tran

Biography:

Xuan-Tu Tran received a B.Sc. degree in 1999 from Hanoi University of Science and a M.Sc. degree in 2003 from Vietnam National University, Hanoi, all in Electronics Engineering and Communications; and a Ph.D. degree in 2008 from Grenoble INP (in collaboration with the CEA-LETI), France, in Micro Nano Electronics.
Xuan-Tu Tran is currently an associate professor at the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications, VNU University of Engineering and Technology (VNU-UET), a member university of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU). He is also an adjunct professor of University of Technology Sydney, Australia. He has worked as a lecturer at Vietnam National University, Hanoi (1999-2003), as a research engineer at the CEA-LETI, MINATEC, France (2003-2008). He was an invited professor at the University Paris-Sud 11, France (2009, 2010), visiting professor at Grenoble INP in 2011. He is currently Director of VNU-key Laboratory for Smart Integrated Systems (SISLAB) and Co-Director of the Joint Technology and Innovation, Research Centre (JTIRC). He is in charge for CoMoSy, VENGME, ReSoNoC, ADEN4IOT projects for embedded systems and multimedia applications. He has published more than 60 papers on international conferences and journals. His research interests include design and test of systems-on-chips, networks-on-chips, design-for-testability, asynchronous/synchronous VLSI design, low power techniques, and hardware architectures for multimedia applications.
He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, IEEE Circuits and Systems (CAS), IEEE Solid-State Circuits and Systems (SSCS), member of IEICE, and the Executive Board of the Radio Electronics Association of Vietnam (REV). He serves as Chairman of IEICE Vienam Section, Chairman of IEEE SSCS Vietnam Chapter. He also served as general chair/co-chair and technical/organizing committee member for numerous international conferences (MCSoC, ICICDT, ATC, DAC, ICDV, DELTA, GIIS, ICCE, RIVF, APCCAS, ICCD, ICCAS, HP3C, NICS, APCC, ACOMP, CommandTel, ICGHIT...), Associate Editor-in-Chief of REV Journal on Electronics and Communications (JEC), Associate Technical Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Information and Communications Technology, Editor of VNU Journal of Computer Science and Communication Engineering (JCSCE), International Journal of Computing and Digital Systems (IJCDS). He won the Second Prize (the 2nd best) of "Vietnamese Talents Award" in 2015 (Giải thưởng Nhân Tài Đất Việt) and the VNU Scientific Award for the period 2011-2016.

Professor Van-Phuc Hoang

Topic: Research Activities on Hardware Security at Le Quy Don Technical University

Currently, the issue of safety and of security for information system (including hardware, firmware and software) is becoming emerging, especially in the context of the today orientation forward smart cities. Hardware Trojan (HT) is one of the most critical topics among hardware security challenges. This talk presents the recent research activities on hardware security at Le Quy Don Technical University. A brief survey of the advanced Side-Channel Analysis (SCA) methods against HT insertion for ASIC design is also presented. Then, a discussion on the application of the SCA methods on real circuits such as processors, SoCs, etc. will be addressed. Finally, the conclusions and potential collaboration activities in this field will be discussed.

Biography:

Van-Phuc Hoang received PhD degree in Electronic Engineering from The University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo, Japan in 2012. He is working as an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of The Department of Microelectronics, Le Quy Don Technical University, Hanoi, Vietnam. He was a postdoc researcher, then an invited scholar with The University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo, Japan in 2013, 2015 and 2017. He was also an invited scholar with University of Strathclyde, UK in 2014. His research interests include digital circuits and systems, hardware security, low power IC design, IoT systems and VLSI architecture for digital signal processing. He has published 6 international journal articles, more than 20 international papers and led one national project, one ministry level project, three university projects and many others. He is also the key member of another national project. Especially, he is the leader of the FIRST project in "Hardware Cybersecurity: Methods, Technologies and Applications" funded by World Bank.

Topic: System-on-Chip based Transceiver for Internet-of-Things

The Internet of things (IoT) is an evolution of mobile, home, automobile, and embedded applications where a network of devices are connected to integrate greater computing capability and extract information using data analytics. Billions of devices are connected via internet to create an intelligent system, and use the data to improve quality of life such a medical, transportation, educational services and optimize the development costs of a products. This workshop will provide an overview of the wireless standards used for IoT – short range and long range. It further discusses the RFIC system architecture and circuit design techniques to build System On Chip (SoC) transceivers for IoT devices.

Biography:

He got PhD degree in Electrical Engineering (RFIC design) from University of California, Davis. He is currently a RF architect and RFIC Lead for wireless transceivers and SOCs at Qualcomm Inc.. Leading groups of design engineers and coordinated cross functional team activities to deliver the product. Led design activities including architecture definition, gathering marketing requirements and specifications, managing engineering schedule, block/top level design/layout and deliver the product.
